Lead Qualification Call Script

A structured phone script for qualifying inbound leads on the first call — opening, discovery questions, objection handling, and a clean next-step close.

When to use this

Use this script for the first phone or video call with an inbound lead — someone who filled out a form, requested a quote, or booked a call directly — before you know whether they’re a genuine fit. It’s designed to run in 10-15 minutes and answer one question: does this lead deserve a full sales process, or should it be deprioritized, nurtured, or disqualified? Pair it with the BANT qualification checklist for the specific questions to track, and use the discovery call agenda once a lead is qualified and ready for a deeper conversation.

Why it works

The script is structured in a deliberate order: rapport and context first, open-ended discovery next, and only then a description of what you offer — reversed from how untrained reps tend to run calls, which is to pitch immediately. Leading with questions rather than a pitch surfaces genuine pain and urgency before you’ve spent any credibility on a sales pitch that may not even be relevant to what they need, a principle covered in more depth in lead qualification. It also builds in an explicit disqualification path, because a fast, honest “not a fit” saves both sides time compared to dragging a bad-fit lead through a full sales cycle.

The script

Opening (30 seconds) “Hi [First Name], thanks for taking the time — I saw you [filled out our form / requested a demo] about [Their Stated Interest]. Before I walk you through anything, I’d love to ask a few quick questions so I can point you toward what’s actually relevant, if that’s alright?”

Context & current state

  • “Can you tell me a bit about how [Their Team/Company] currently handles [Relevant Process]?”
  • “What prompted you to look into a solution like this now, as opposed to six months ago?”

Pain & impact

  • “What’s the biggest challenge that creates for you day-to-day?”
  • “If this stayed unsolved for another year, what would that cost you — in time, money, or missed opportunity?”

Decision process

  • “Who else, besides you, would be involved in evaluating or approving a decision like this?”
  • “Is there a budget already allocated for this, or would it need to be requested?”

Timeline

  • “What’s driving your timeline — is there a specific date or event this needs to be resolved by?”

Close

  • If qualified: “Based on what you’ve shared, I think this is worth a deeper conversation. Can we set up [30/45 minutes] with [relevant stakeholder] to go through this properly?”
  • If not qualified: “Based on what you’ve described, I don’t think we’re the right fit for this right now, but here’s [alternative resource/referral] that might help.”

Customization tips

  • Adjust the “impact” question to your product’s actual value driver — cost, time, risk, or revenue — rather than asking all four generically.
  • If the lead resists the discovery questions and pushes for pricing immediately, answer with a range and pivot back to one qualifying question before continuing — don’t skip qualification entirely just to keep them engaged.
  • Track answers against a scoring framework like lead scoring so qualification decisions are consistent across reps, not just gut feel.
